Centreport Buildings & Landscape Te Whanganui-a-Tara Wellington 2006-2025

Over a 15-20 year period, I worked closely with CentrePort to develop, test, and evolve the Harbour Quays and wider Port Redevelopment Precinct masterplans, supporting the transition from operational port land into a resilient and publicly accessible waterfront environment.

This consisted of:

  • Working with the Port and engineers on several seismic strengthening schemes. This included critical architectural changes to Shed 39 (now the CentrePort Head Office/Mess Building) including dealing with changes in floor levels, new accessibility and fire requirements, integrating new structure into interior spaces and then the fitout of the shed to incorporate head offce and full mess.

  • Working from feasibility through to construction completion on the new Custom House (below) a six storey commercial building designed specifically for the New Zealand Custom Service. The building was one of New Zealand’s first 5 star Green Star commercial buildings. The building had strict environmental, business continuity (including generator) and seismic requirements.

  • Working on several infrastructure projects, including new roads, swales and public parks within the commercial precinct. Key to this infrastructure was one of Wellington’s first water sensitive urban design (WSUD) road networks with integrated swales for road stormwater run off and specially orientated wind screens to mediate the weather on this exposed harbour side site. The swale road network was designed in collaboration with Wraight + Associates landscape architects.

Through ongoing collaboration, the masterplan balanced port operations, tenant requirements, seismic and infrastructure constraints, and public access.
